Stool Workshop 2021 - babychair
2 WEEKS SUMMER WORKSHOP AT CAPELLAGÅRDEN, ÖLAND 2021
I had recently become a parent in the summer of 2021, so my main idea here was to make something that my daughter could use everyday, a diningchair. I wanted to explore the possibilities to make soft shapes in the wood, so i was immediately starting to sketch using subdivision surface modelling in rhino to enable the curved shapes. I started out using the measurements of the popular antiloop design by IKEA, which i knew was serviceable. In rhino the baseshape was created using a very simple mesh and then transformed to a SubD.
The design concept builds around similar ideas as earlier year, where i glue pieces together, trying to get the grain of the wood as log as possible in the legs and supports, and then cut away the "unnessesary" wood to reach the final shape. This process was quite extensive and slow but also very meditative and satisfying to wotk with the material and the tools, to smell the pine wood and see the stool take form.
The material in the babychair is Pine and its surface is treated with Osmo wood wax oil to make it easy to wash away food from it.
